When a fever in a child actually needs a doctor
Most fevers are harmless. These are the specific signs that warrant a same-day appointment.

Fever is the body doing its job. What matters is not the number on the thermometer but how your child looks and behaves.
See a doctor the same day if
- Your baby is under three months old and has any fever.
- Your child is unusually drowsy, floppy or difficult to wake.
- There is a rash that does not fade when pressed.
- Breathing is fast, laboured or noisy.
- There are signs of dehydration — few wet nappies, no tears, a dry mouth.
- The fever has lasted more than five days.
What usually does not need a visit
A child with a fever who is still drinking, playing between naps and responding normally is usually fine to monitor at home with fluids and rest.
